Title : Development of computer-assisted exercises to enhance the conceptual thinking abilities for technical/physical problem solving in agriculture and applied biology.

OOI98/22 started effectively October 98 funding by "Onderwijsraad" KULeuven

Prof. Josse De Baerdemaeker, promotor
Prof. Vic Goedseels, copromotor
Dr . Guido Wyseure, copromotor/coordinator
Ir.  Jan Lagey, research associate (left March 99)
Mr. Andrey Solomin, Project Developer (left Feb 2001)

Summary :

The project develops self-study packages to enhance problem-solving capabilities. The general structure and problem statement is supplied on WWW-pages. The exercises themselves are randomly generated. The students are encouraged to reflect in a critical way and to perform a « what-if » analysis of their results. The variation in boundary-conditions and geometry offers a sufficiently rich learning-environment within the context of agriculture and applied biology. Students should learn to recognize the relevant physical processes, to specify controllable sub-problems, integration-domains , controlvolumes and initial and boundary conditions. The aim is to develop quantitative skills and insight in the analysis of biological systems.
