Home economics Food science and technology
The study of food technology and food chemistry in Germany is
attached more to the engineering and technical faculties than to agricultural
or horticultural institutions. therefore, information on this type of studies
must be asked for at the following institutions:

In this section, only studies of home economics (Ökotrophologie
and Hauswirtschaft) and nutrition are considered, because they are linked
more to the agricultural faculties.
Non-University Higher Education (Fachhochschulen)
Admission Requirements
- Fachhochschulreife (special technical education qualification)
or
Fachabitur (special higher education exam)
or
Abitur ( general higher education exam)
Length and Structure of Courses
The study programmes take six to eight semesters depending on
how the practical training is organised.
The structure of studies is similar to most other studies in related
fields, it starts with basic studies in natural sciences and economics
and continues with Hauptstudium (main studies) concentrating on more applied
sciences of nutrition, economics and household management and specialisation
on the subjects chosen by the student. Due to the different institutions
in different states, there is a variety of different study programmes.
They are concluded by the final examinations and the written final study,
each student has to present for graduation.
Practical Training
Periods of practical training in industry before or during studies
have to be completed by the student, their length also varies between institutions.
Contributory Research Work
At the end of the Hauptstudium the students have to work out
a study on a research topic from one of their subjects. They have to complete
this study within six months.
European Dimension
In all institutions modern language courses are offered as optional
subjects.
Grade / Title of Diploma / Degree
The degree conferred by the Fachhochschulen is Diplomökotrophologe,
Dipl. ök. troph., (qualified home economist).
Further Study
Graduates of this study programme may continue their study in
the same field at a university where some of the credits may be transferred,
or enter a study course for professional teachers in home economics and
food sciences.
Employment Market
There is a wide variety of job possibilities like public or private
homes, business management, in industry for product or recipe development,
food research, quality control, marketing and public relations. There are
also quite a number of positions in extension services, teaching, in federations
and in the media sector.

Universities
Admission Requirements
- Fachabitur (special higher education exam)
or
Abitur (general higher education exam)
Length and Structure of Courses
Length of study is usually eight to nine semesters. Although
the details may vary between universities, there is also the general structure
of a Grundstudium (basic studies) of between two and four semesters
mainly introducing into the natural sciences, economics, and social sciences.
Basic studies are concluded by the Diplomvorprüfung (mid-examination).
The main studies (Hauptstudium) of four to six semesters are devoted
to foodstuff analysis, food manufacturing process and home economics as
well as to the applied home economics and the more specialised topics of
experimental nutrition, technology and management. The Diplomprüfung
(final examination) consists of examinations in compulsory and optional
subjects. The Diplomarbeit (final thesis) concludes the study programme.
Practical Training
The regulations vary between universities, at some universities
a practical training of at least six months is required.
Contributory Research Work
The students have to present a final thesis for graduation, which
has to deal with a scientific topic of one of the subjects in the study
programme and must be completed within three to six months.
European Dimension
Language courses are offered as optionals at all universities.
Some of the faculties also have established programmes for student exchange
with other European countries.
Grade / Title of Diploma / Degree
The graduates earn the degree of Diplomoecotrophologe (Dipl oec.
troph.) which may be compared to a Master of Science in Home Economics
and Food Science.
Further Study
The graduates may enroll in a doctoral programme at the university.
For admission to the special training course (Referendariat)
in public service, a year’s practical experience is required.
Employment Market
There is again a wide range of possibilities to work for the
graduates of this study programme. Since it is not a very traditional study
course, the graduates must show flexibility to find an appropriate position.
However, positions may be found in consumer consultation, education
of young and adults, in analysis of foodstuffs, management of homes and
large companies, in hospitals, hotels and canteens, in product development,
engineering companies, media sector, consumer organisations and state administration.
