Non-University Higher Education (Fachhochschulen und Gesamthochschulen)

Admission Requirements

    - Fachhochschulreife (higher technical education qualification)
    or
    Fachabitur (special higher education exam)
    or
    Abitur (general higher education exam)
    and
    - practical training, length depending on the institution.

Length and Structure of Courses
Just as in the other study programmes, it will take six or eight semesters of courses until the final examination, depending on whether practical training of two semesters is included or not. In order to complete the programme a contributory study must be presented which can take another semester.

The programme is partitioned into two parts, Grundstudium (basic studies) and Hauptstudium (main studies), the length of both is between two and four semesters, depending on the institution. Basic studies consist of courses in natural sciences, economics, engineering, design and arts. The main studies concentrate on more practical applications, on economic and technical sciences.

Practical Training
Students must have completed practical training periods of varying length depending on the institution before studies. The training may be for gardening or a similar profession. Other practical training may be included in the study programme.

Contributory Research Work
The student is obliged to work on a study thesis as part of his final examination.

European Dimension
Language courses in modern European languages are available for the students and most institutions offer participation in some exchange programmes.

Grade / Title of Diploma / Degree
Upon graduation the students earn the degree of Diplomingenieur (Dipl. Ing.), sometimes with the addition of the letters FH (Fachhochschulen).

Further Study
Graduates from the Fachhochschulen have got the general higher education exam and may therefore continue at university; often a number of credits can be transferred to their university study programme, if they continue in the same field.

Employment Market
There are quite good chances for graduates with an extensive practical experience in private business. Other possibilities exist in public administration and institutions, in extension and urban garden management and planning, in publishing houses, urban development corporations and a variety of other organisations.

Universities

Admission Requirements
    - Fachabitur (special higher education exam)
    or
    Abitur (general higher education exam)
    and
    - practical training between six weeks and six months
Length and Structure of Courses
The regular length of studies is between nine and eleven semesters. Due to the demands in the various fields, the students have to complete quite a number of compulsory and optional courses in natural sciences, engineering, economics, planning and arts.

The study programme is partitioned as usual in basic studies for four semesters until the Vordiplom examination and the main studies of also four to five semesters up to the final examinations. Practical training may be integrated into the study period, such that the duration of studies is extended to eleven semesters. The study programme is characterised by the application of the scientific and technical methods to the practical problems. Therefore quite a number of projects have to be completed before final examinations, the Hauptdiplomprüfung. Also a Diplomarbeit (final thesis) is required for graduation.

Practical Training
The practical training of at least six months has to be done before or during studies or may be integrated into the course programme depending on the institution.

Contributory Research Work
The Diplomarbeit (final thesis), important part of the final examination, may be completed as an individual or a group effort, for which a time of three or six months is considered, depending on the institution.

European Dimension
Students have the possibility to take language courses along their studies. There exist also formal and informal exchange programmes between universities of different countries.

Grade / Title of Diploma / Degree
The graduates get the degree of Dimplomingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) from the university.

Further Study
The study programme may be completed by a doctoral programme which mainly consists of preparing a scientific thesis and an oral examination on it.  Due to the different kinds of institutions offering this type of studies, the degrees differ (it may be Doctor of Engineering, Dr.-Ing., Doctor of horticultural, Dr. rer. hort., or of agricultural sciences, Dr. sc. agr.).

There is also the possibility to enter civil service and participate in the special training course (Referendariat) of about two years in preparation for the second state examination, which is necessary to fill posts as a senior officer in civil service.

Employment Market
For graduates of land use planning and landscape architecture, there is quite a broad field of opportunities for work. They may start their own business in planning or construction, work in extension services or companies, public administration, planning management, conservation organisations, ministries, research institutes, universities, professional colleges and organisations or in the media. Due to this great variety, even the relatively large number of graduates has a chance to get a job.
