Fisheries

Non-University Higher Education (Fachhochschulen)

A complete study programme for fisheries is not available at Fachhochschulen. Interested students may ask for more detailed informations within the study programmes of agriculture at the institutions listed there.

Universities

On the level of universities, there is only one study programme in Germany, that offers a complete programme explicitly devoted to fisheries: the studies of “fish culture and water management“ (Fischwirtschaft und Gewässerbewirtschaftung) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. However, there are also possibilities to get to the fisheries sector through studies of biology or agriculture with specialisation’s in inland or sea water fisheries. Only the complete study programme is presented here.

Admission Requirements

    - Fachabitur (special higher exam)
    or
    Abitur (general higher education exam)
    and
    - a practical training of at least six months.

Length and Structure of Courses
Length and structure of this study programme are quite similar to the agricultural and horticultural studies. Regular length of studies is nine semesters with four semesters planned for the Grundstudium (basic studies), another four for the Hauptstudium (main studies) and one semester for the final thesis.

The basic studies are the same as for the agricultural study programme except that the introduction to plant sciences is replaced by the introduction to fish culture and water management. After the Vordiplom, the students have to take compulsory courses in limnology, lake and river fisheries, fish breeding and fish pathology and may choose three optional subjects from a variety of fish and water sciences as well as from all agricultural sciences.

The phase of main studies is also concluded by the examinations for the Diplomprüfung („Diplom“ examination) and the Diplomarbeit (final thesis).

Practical Training
At least six months of practical training in the profession have to be completed before the first examination of the Diplomprüfung (Diplom examination).

Contributory Research Work
The Diplomarbeit (final thesis) in one of the subjects of the student has to be worked on independently and by scientific methods. It must be finished within six months of time and constitutes a major part of the study programme.

European Dimension
Foreign language classes are available and can be chosen by the students as part of their optional courses.

Grade / Title of Diploma / Degree
Graduates of the study programme get the degree of Diplom-Agraringenieur (Dipl. Ing. agr.) für Fischwirtschaft und Gewässerbewirtschaftung, i. e. in fish culture and water management.

Further Study
Graduates can follow the same post graduate studies as all other higher agricultural engineers. they also can enroll in a doctoral programme for the degree of Doktor der Fischereiwissen-schaften, doctor of Fishery Sciences. There is also the possibility to go into the civil service and complete the special training course (Referendariat) of about two years.

Employment Market
The graduates of this study programme enter a labour market which is highly specialised. Therefore, not too many positions will be open for them. However, the number of graduates is also limited up to now. Positions may be offered in extension, administration, private fishery enterprises as well as industry.
